You may see an increase in both vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Halloween. Keep Fido on a tight leash when walking him. Cats are always safer indoors, but if you do let Fluffy out, keep her inside around the autumn holiday.
Those sweet treats are definitely not safe for Fluffy and Fido! Many of those yummy candies include things like chocolate, nuts, raisins, and xylitol, which are all toxic to pets. Hard candies can also pose choking risks, as can candy wrappers.
Keep your furry buddy in mind as you are decorating. Those fake spiderwebs can choke or entangle playful pets. Anything that runs on battery or electricity is also a hazard. Jack-o-lanterns are a concern as well. You don’t want Fido knocking over anything with a candle in it! We also recommend hanging anything with small parts, dangling threads, or sharp edges well out of paws’ reach.
Unfortunately, people are one of the concerns we have to bring up. This is a prime time for pranksters. Cats—especially black kitties—are especially at risk here. As mentioned above, keep Fluffy indoors at this time of year. If Fido has a yard to play in, limit his ‘recess’ time and bring him in before dark.
Some dogs get very agitated when the doorbell rings. If Fido tends to bark or even growl at visitors, a steady stream of costumed trick-or-treaters may get him worked up. Consider putting him in his crate or in a quiet back room with food, toys, treats, and bedding on Halloween night.
Speaking of costumes, it’s become quite popular for people to dress their dogs. Just keep Fido’s comfort and safety in mind. Never put your pup in anything that restricts his vision or movement, or in anything that is tight, hot, or itchy. Items with small parts, like buttons, are also best avoided, as some dogs try to eat them. Also, give your canine buddy a say in his outfit. If your pooch seems uncomfortable, just put a cute bandana or bow tie on his collar.
